A few years back came 'Boom' and it almost seemed that the filmy career of its leading ladies Katerina Kaif and Padma Lakshmi had 'boomed'. With bad reviews and worse reception to the movie, it took some time for 'Boom' to fade away from public memory. While Katerina has now started doing good for herself after back to back successes in the form of 'Sarkar' and 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya', Padma Lakshmi too may have some reasons to cheer about as she would be seen in soon to be released 'Mistress Of Spices'. Though the world knows that 'Mistress Of Spices' is an Aishwarya Rai movie, Padma Lakshmi too plays a small but important character in the movie. Padma Lakshmi showed more skin than Mallika at Cannes
Indian women are the flavour of the season in Europe, but mostly for less cerebral attributes. First, it was Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat who was being talked about for strutting her stuff in revealing outfits.
Then, author Salman Rushdie's India-born wife Padma Lakshmi grabbed headlines for similar reasons.
The 32-year-old model, walking hand-in-hand with her husband in Rome, chose to wear an almost transparent white top and grabbed many an eyeball on the streets and later at a reception for Rushdie in the city hall.
The mayor of Rome and other dignitaries had gathered there at the launch of a literary festival to hear 57-year-old Rushdie expound on writing and society and talk about hope and fear, the theme of the festival.
But the author's rivetting talk could not prevent the eyes of the audience from wandering to Mrs Rushdie. Not all were impressed, though. A diplomat at the event said, "It was an utterly inappropriate way to dress."
But Lakshmi is surely no shrinking violet. She has been a showgirl on prime-time Italian television and has now posed nude to raise money for the Elton John Aids Foundation.
She is one of the "world's 44 most beautiful women" featured in 4 Inches which was on display at Christies.
In the book, Victoria Beckham holds a pair of strappy Jimmy Choo stilletoes, strategically placed to preserve her modesty, and wears only a smile, a Cartier bracelet and of course, that dazzling wedding ring.
Others baring all include the Duchess of York, supermodels Elle MacPherson and Kate Moss, Geri Halliwell, Rod Stewart's estranged wife Rachael Hunter and Sophie Dahl.
As Lakshmi has said, "Certainly, the photos are a little risque, but eroticism is a fundamental part of human nature. It's futile to ignore it. It's not scandalous to accept this as reality." Certainly, there are enough buyers!
